For the activity, organised by the Amigas das Cegoñas association in collaboration with Ecoloxistas en Acción Ourense, children installed 15 nest boxes donated by Husqvarna

Ordes, 30 January 2023.- The Amigas das Cegoñas association and Ecoloxistas en Acción Ourense took a census of the birds in the Barbaña River as it flows through the capital and installed 15 nests donated by Husqvarna along a walkway. 25 eco-vigilantes from the Franciscans of Ourense also participated in the project, in addition to local residents and passers-by who decided to join the group.

The youngest members of the group had the task of installing the nest boxes and will also be responsible for safekeeping and monitoring them. In the coming weeks they’ll be able to find out which nests are occupied, and eventually, they’ll get to see the different species that use the shelters.

On the day, the types of nests for different bird species were explained: great tit, northern wren, Eurasian blue tit, blackbird and even bats. They also learned about invasive species, such as red swamp crayfish, the black mink, pond slider and Pampass grass.

This activity will improve the urban biodiversity in Ourense, helping protect birds that benefit the entire urban environment. Having birds in cities provides great benefits both in terms of quality of life and helping to combat insect pests (flies, caterpillars, mosquitoes, etc.).

Husqvarna, through its official distributor in Spain and Portugal, is proud to contribute to programmes that help preserve the environment and the local area, both of utmost importance to the development of human life. In this vein, it supports associations like Amigos das Cegoñas on a regular basis with their programmes, while working to produce work tools for the most sustainable agricultural sectors.
